The moment of the surprise proposal on a gondola near Ponte San Trovaso

Ida and Granit are both originally from Kosovo. He lives in England. She lives in Kosovo. They met two years ago at a friend’s wedding, and the connection was immediate. When Granit decided he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Ida, he chose a short spring trip to Venice to ask the question.

April 12, 2026. A Saturday morning. The city still half asleep. He contacted me weeks in advance to help plan every detail so that Ida would suspect nothing. This is the story of their gondola proposal in Dorsoduro, from an empty gondola station near the Accademia to the monumental steps of Santa Maria della Salute.

Before she arrived: how we planned the surprise

Granit’s instructions were simple. Ida should not suspect anything. My job was to make the entire experience feel like a spontaneous morning gondola ride. If you want to understand how this type of coordination works in detail, I explain the full process on my Venice proposal photographer page.

I booked the gondola myself in advance from the official Accademia departure station. On the morning of April 12, I arrived at the gondola station as early as possible, right when the gondoliers opened at 9:00 AM. I spoke with the gondolier personally, explained the full route, the timing, and exactly where the proposal would happen. Everything was set before Ida and Granit even left their hotel.

Granit’s only task was to walk to the station with Ida as if they were simply starting their day with a gondola ride. Nothing unusual, nothing forced.

We chose 9:30 AM deliberately. The gondola service opens at 9:00, so I needed that first half hour to brief the gondolier and get myself into position. By 9:30 on an April morning, Dorsoduro is still calm. The canals are nearly empty. The spring light is soft and even, without the harshness that comes later in the day. It was the perfect compromise between having enough time to prepare and catching the city at its quietest.

The moment: a delivery boat, a plan B, and tears of joy

My original position was on the first bridge over the Rio de San Trovaso. I had chosen this spot carefully. The canals in this part of Dorsoduro are among the most beautiful and typical in all of Venice. They are wide enough for me to stand on a bridge, see the gondola approaching from far away, and photograph from multiple angles. A downward shot as the gondola passes underneath. A lateral frame as it glides along the fondamenta. This variety of perspectives, colours, and light is something I have studied and refined over years of working in this exact neighbourhood. It is my favourite route in the entire city.

But when I arrived, a large delivery boat was unloading supplies right on the fondamenta, blocking my view entirely. This is Venice. You always need a plan B. This is also why working with a local photographer who knows Venezia intimately makes all the difference. I did not panic. I simply moved.

I repositioned on the Ponte San Trovaso, the second bridge along the canal. And that is where everything happened.

The gondola appeared around the bend. Granit reached for the ring. Ida had absolutely no idea.

When she understood what was happening, she covered her face. She cried. She laughed. She said yes.

I captured every second. My smartphone was mounted directly on my camera body, recording video of the proposal while I was simultaneously shooting photos. The bridge gave me the exact angle I needed: a clear, elevated view down the canal, the couple framed perfectly inside the gondola, the gondolier behind them, the old brick walls of Dorsoduro on either side.

Through the canals: following the gondola on foot

After the proposal, I followed them from the outside, moving from bridge to bridge along the fondamenta, capturing their joy and their first moments together as an engaged couple.

The gondola crossed the Rio dell’Ognissanti. This canal is the reason I chose this specific route for their morning gondola proposal in Dorsoduro. The view here is beautiful, the water calm, and the architecture on both sides creates a natural frame that makes every photo feel composed without any effort.

At the next canal, I boarded the gondola to capture the final stretch from inside. Close portraits. Quiet smiles. Ida leaning against Granit’s shoulder. The intimacy that only comes when two people have just shared the most important moment of their lives together, and the adrenaline is still there.

We returned toward the Grand Canal with the Ponte dell’Accademia rising behind us. Thirty minutes on the water. Every minute counted. If you are curious about how I plan gondola routes, timing, and photographer positioning for this type of session, I cover everything in my complete gondola proposal planning guide.

Walking from Accademia to Santa Maria della Salute

The second part of the session was thirty minutes on foot through Dorsoduro, completing the full route from Accademia to Salute.

We passed through Campo di Sant’Agnese, where the morning light filtered through the tall plane trees. Their energy made every frame effortless. They are young, full of life, and the emotion from the gondola was still radiating through every gesture, every look, every spontaneous burst of laughter.

We walked along the Rio de San Vio to Campo San Vio. The neighbourhood was remarkably quiet for a Saturday in early April, even though Venice was beginning to fill up. But this part of Dorsoduro, slightly off the main path yet close to everything, stays calm when the rest of the city does not.

We reached the Ponte San Cristoforo, my favourite bridge in Dorsoduro. It crosses the Rio de le Toreselle near the Campiello Barbaro, and the perspective it offers is simply stunning. I photographed them from far away and from close up. I gave myself permission to take my time here.

Then we continued toward Calle Lanza, where the view opens onto the Grand Canal from the gondola traghetto station. One of the most beautiful and least known viewpoints in all of Dorsoduro.

And finally, the last stop: the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute. I made their iconic photos on the monumental stone steps, the two of them small against the immense bronze doors and white Istrian stone. From intimate canals to the grandeur of the basilica in one continuous walk. Dorsoduro offers this range of settings within minutes, which is one of the reasons I often recommend it. You can explore other proposal locations across the city in my guide to the best places to propose in Venice.

Granit had originally wanted to continue to Piazza San Marco after the session. But Ida, still glowing, decided she wanted to stay in Dorsoduro. She wanted to keep the feeling of the morning intact. I agreed with her completely. At 9:30 AM, San Marco was already full of people. Dorsoduro was the right decision: discreet, beautiful morning light, calm canals, and an incredible variety of settings in a very short distance. We went from tiny canals to the Grand Canal, from a quiet bridge to the baroque magnificence of La Salute, all in ninety minutes.

Five Days Later

Ida could not wait to see the photos. She messaged me several times asking how soon they would be ready. I delivered the full edited gallery in five days, which is the time I need to manage my other work and deliver clean, professional post production. No rush jobs. No shortcuts.

When she received the link, she was overwhelmed. These images are now the beginning of their story together.

Frequently asked questions

Sunset is beautiful, but it is not always the best option. In April, the morning light in Dorsoduro is soft, even, and forgiving. There are almost no other gondolas on the canals at that hour, which means total privacy. The gondola service opens at 9:00 AM, so 9:30 gives me enough time to arrive first, brief the gondolier, and position myself on the right bridge before the couple arrives. The city is still waking up, and the calm of the canals creates a completely different atmosphere than a busy late afternoon session.

Ninety minutes in total. Thirty minutes on the gondola, from the Accademia departure through the canals of Dorsoduro and back to the Grand Canal. Then thirty minutes walking from Accademia through Campo di Sant’Agnese, Campo San Vio, Ponte San Cristoforo, Calle Lanza, and finishing at Santa Maria della Salute. This combination gives a complete visual story with a real variety of settings, from narrow canals to open views of the Grand Canal to the monumental steps of La Salute.

It happens regularly in Venice. Deliveries, construction barges, unexpected closures. This is exactly why I always prepare at least two positions for every session. On this morning, I moved from the first bridge to the Ponte San Trovaso in less than two minutes, and the final result was just as strong. Knowing the alternatives in advance is part of my preparation.

Absolutely. This is what Ida decided on the spot, and I fully supported her choice. Dorsoduro in the morning is quieter, more intimate, and visually rich. San Marco is iconic but often crowded, even early in the day. Staying in one neighbourhood allows the session to feel cohesive and relaxed instead of rushed. The walk from Accademia to Santa Maria della Salute covers enough variety in architecture, light, and atmosphere to fill an entire gallery.
